Subject: Modern Foreign Languages
Head of Department: Mrs K Woodman
Language learning at its best can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences that life can offer. We learn social skills, the ability to work in a team, communication skills, problem-solving skills, confidence, open-mindedness and flexibility, which are all skills employers look for. Pupils can go on to study Spanish at sixth form and university. When applying for jobs, if you prove yourself to be a capable employee and you can speak a foreign language, you are much more likely to be successful and get the job of your dreams.
We follow a course based upon the ‘Mira’ textbooks throughout years 7 and 8. All pupils have two lessons of Spanish a week. Language lessons are planned carefully in a fun, interesting and interactive way to give pupils a good grasp of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Pupils are also introduced to the culture and history of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries.
We have two lessons a week in years 9-11. We develop the knowledge acquired in KS3 and work on perfecting each of the four skills, as well as translating.
We study three themes throughout the year: Identity and culture; Local, national, international and global areas of interest and current and future study and employment.
How is it assessed?
Pupils are assessed in all four skills in Spanish at the end of year 11. Students have to take all exams in the same tier- i.e. all foundation or all higher. All exams will make reference to the country or countries where the language is spoken. The exams will use authentic material i.e. adverts, poems, literary texts, emails and text messages.
Unit 1: Listening (25%) takes place in the May/ June exam period of year 11
